Prieur d’un riche monastère, Bonivard entre en conflit au début du XVIᵉ siècle avec le duc de Savoie qui l’incarcère par deux fois dans de redoutables forteresses. Le gentilhomme en ressort indemne, exploite les bourrasques de l’histoire et devient historien. Portrait d’un grand humaniste, injustement oublié.
