Paragliding Wold Cup june 13th to 20th 2009
Today the World Cup is a major event in competitive paragliding alongside the European and World Championships. The Paragliding World Cup is an annual competition made up of between 6 and 8 rounds that take place all over the world.
This year there will also be rounds in Brazil (March 21st to 28th), Korea (April 25th to May 2nd, Turkey (May 3rd to June 6th), Croatia (July 11th to 18th) and Italy (September 1st to 12th).
The sites chosen for the French stage will provide numerous varied and attractive races around the Annecy basin and in the Bornes, Bauges and Aravis mountains, while fully respecting the rules concerning nearness to the airport, the Bout du Lac Nature Reserve and the Bauges Natural Park.
The basis of this competition is to do a compulsory circuit in a minimum time without the aid of external forms of energy other than the hot air currents produced by the sun.
The race starts at the « top » and the competitors have to fly over the markers in a specific order and cross the finishing line before landing. The race is recorded on the GPS carried by each participant. The data are then collected by the organiser who determines the classified result.
The races can last from 2 to 5 hours depending on the circuit chosen on the day of the event by the race director and a committee of paragliders who analyse the meteorological conditions to take maximum advantage of the air potential for the day.
The World Cup takes place under the auspices of the PWCA.
