A bit of history... The France, the last franch steamship
The France is one of the finest freshwater shipwrecks!
Launched on 13th May 1909, The France was the last french paddle boat to be constructed, was 47 meters long ans had a capacity of 700 passengers. In 1962 the announcement od its forthcoming disarmament and destruction gave rive to a general outcry amongst the inhabitants of Annecy.
The boat was bought bay the owner of the Paris river pleasure boats and its last trip on the lake took place on 27th May 1965.
It was restored and became a secondary residence fixed on the lake, constantly moving round its anchorage.
On 13th March 1971 the population was shocked to discover taht The France had disappeared. Many theories was raised and even sabotage was mentionned, but no one will evr know the truth. The most likely explanation is that lack of maintenance and frost had created a leak beneath the water line. The stern of the boat went down, the vessel followed and then keeled over.
